I often joke with my husband that society didn’t expect women to work like in the 1950s so that I could wear athletic clothes all day long.  (Before I get any hate mail, IT IS A JOKE.  I am fully aware and extremely grateful to those women worked their asses off to changed women’s roles in society.  IT’S JUST A JOKE, PEOPLE!)

Don’t misunderstand me.  I really enjoy working and love that I provide for my family just as much as my husband.  But I want my job to be more than showing up in my work clothes to sit in a cubicle and collect a paycheck.  This is going to sound so corny, but I want it to provide meaning to my life.  Work that excites me to get out of bed every morning.

What I doesn’t excite me are jobs that haven’t realized it is 2017.  Where does it say people are their most productive selves dressed  in uncomfortable clothing, sitting in a prison gray cubicle and doing work that could be done from anywhere in the world?  I could not be more opposite.  At the office, I am waiting for time to pass.  When I am working from home, my productivity goes way up and I am able to accomplish so much.

So what is your perfect job in a perfect world, Amy?

That’s a great question and one I ask myself every time all the time.  Problem is, I don’t actually have a great answer for that.  I’ve never been someone focused on a specific career (i.e. doctor, lawyer, teacher).  Yes, I’m in law school and that would imply that I want to be a lawyer (which I do), but the law degree is mostly a means to an end to make myself more marketable.

What I truly enjoy is being an asset to people.  Someone people depend on.  I thrive on working with other people to accomplish something, even if that something is someone else’s dream.  When I feel like I have nothing to offer or I am being underutilized, my self-worth declines dramatically.  Yes, I know I shouldn’t judge my worth on this, but let’s be real, we all do it.

So I guess to really answer that question, my perfect job in a perfect world would be one that allows me to support other hard-working entrepreneurs, provides me flexibility to create my own schedule, and gives me the opportunity to meet new people.  And maybe, to wear athletic clothing a little more than I do now.  🙂
